Dr. Susan Baldwin’s Dog Orphanage
Submitted by Johnny deHaseth
I am honoring Susan Baldwin by sharing her story with you. Susan lives in a tiny trailer without running water, heater or electricity in a small town in Baja California on a borrowed plot of land. She shelters between 85 and 100 homeless animals that she has rescued. Sometimes she finds day old puppies abandoned in the river bed, animals run over be vehicles and left to die on the road, stray dogs full of mange, tics, fleas and desperately hungry. One such animal is named Mona a beautiful Boarder Collie Mix that the locals didn’t want because she was black, the color of evil. Susan found her after she had 2 litters and was skin and bones. She nursed her back to health, spayed her, inoculated her against rabies and removed all the parasites from her body. She then talked me into adopting Mona which has turned out to be the most loving and grateful pet that I have ever befriended.
Susan uses the little money she receives and spends it on her passion, that which I call her Dog Orphanage. It is awe inspiring to see such a selfless woman that could be living in comfort in the U. S. sacrifice so much. The locals don’t support her because they can’t understand why she does this. They have spread rumors that she is crazy and should be ignored. Dr. Susan Baldwin I respect you, I admire you, I look up to you and pray that many who read this will want to celebrate what you are doing for it is a very special vocation. Especially in a small town in this third world country under the conditions you live in, to be there for these living beings who are very lucky to have you.
Next time any of you are in Baja stop by and say hello to Dr. Baldwin. She is in the town of La Mision (where La Fonda is located) passed the children’s orphanage close to the hill top cemetery. Just a smile, a hug, a little love will go a long way in letting this selfless dedicated human being know that we animal lovers appreciate what she is doing for our friends………..Johnny deHaseth
